Did Rufus Henry die in the story Durango Street?

Rufus Henry does not die at the end of the story. Rufus shows that a change has occurred within him when there is trouble at the dance and he goes to Alex for help and guidance, instead of his former belief that gangs were his only support.

There is no final word on what becomes of Rufus. The author does not relate a conclusion for him, it is up to the reader to decide if Rufus went to the continuation school and continued to lead a more positive and successful life.
