Fahrenheit 451 is an allegory. While it is possible to find specific examples of allegories within the text of the book, I believe it is most important that the reader recognize that the book, as a whole, is an allegory for censorship.
The Northbrook Info Library website does a excellent job of explain the relationship between the book and world events that were of major importance at the time it was written. There is also a great deal of other interesting information that I believe will help any reader to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the author's intentions and use of various literary turns.
