Once the witch trials begin, and all the accusations begin to fly, the town is consumed with paranoia. The individual's only form of defense against accusation is to be considered a supporter of the court and to defend their work to root out witches in Salem.
The authorities of Salem stand at the head of the community along with the judges and magistrates who have come to Salem to rid the town of witches. If you do not stand with them, you stand against them. If you remain unified with the powers of the church, the court and the good citizens of Salem, you are safe.
It doesn't matter if they're right or not, your life depends on your ability to stand with the court.
