Montag realizes that after he has burned and killed Beatty that Beatty kept antagonizing Montag because Beatty WANTED TO DIE. The fact that Beatty is able to quote from literature so well and so completely indicates that he is extremely well-read and perhaps even owns a plethora of books himself. Perhaps he has hated his life longer than anyone knows and was looking for someone just like Montag who will have the guts to go through with killing him.
